Maryland First Lady Katie O’Malley and Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake along with volunteers from Kaiser Permanente and Friends School prepared meals at Our Daily Bread in Baltimore on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as a part of the governor’s focus on community service during the national holiday. Sabree Akinyele, Director of the Our Daily Bread Employment Center commented,  “Every volunteer is special to us.We value them on a daily basis. We are also thrilled when volunteers such as Maryland First Lady Katie O’Malley and Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, think of serving at Our Daily Bread as a wonderful way to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

Kaiser Permanente volunteers had shirts to honor this special day, with their message “Give. Help. Serve. Support.” which Kaiser generously accomplishes through the work of their dedicated employees, who volunteer throughout the year and the company’s vital financial support. Also included was the poignant quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.– “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” We are so grateful for Our Daily Bread’s volunteer force of over 5,000 that answers Dr. King’s call to service throughout the year. It is only through this strong commitment of so many dedicated volunteers that over 700 of Baltimore’s hungry are served with kindness and dignity each day and offered the tools and resources to rebuild their lives and be inspired to answer the call themselves.
