Students from Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore received the 2016 Anne Lindsey Otenasek Youth Service Award, given annually to honor Anne Lindsey Otenasek’s personal commitment to helping others. Kimberlee Kahl of Our Daily Bread told us that the students of Mt. St. Joe’s are wonderful examples of Lindsey’s volunteer work as they contribute their talents in a variety of ways to many people who need assistance. They have been volunteering at Our Daily Bread for several years throughout every school year. The students are always attentive, thoughtful and respectful. When asked this year if they would consider donating casseroles, they said “yes” without hesitation! The students now make casseroles and bring donations as well as volunteering.
Director of Campus Ministry and Service Coordinator Clay Bonham accepted the award on behalf of the school. During his remarks, Mr. Bonham said, “The experience of serving our struggling brothers and sisters has a profound impact on many of our students at Mount Saint Joseph High School. I feel the word award sounds too close to the word reward, which is not why we serve. Our school and our students serve because service is fundamental to who we are. It is actually an honor and privilege for our young men to have the opportunity to meet, learn from and serve some of Baltimore city’s most vulnerable.”
