The separation of families happening at the southern border of the United States is inhumane and unconscionable. Life in a dangerous or frightening home is traumatic. The journey to the U.S. border is not an easy way to escape that trauma. To imply or insist that separation will be a deterrent is misguided at best and profoundly destructive at worst. We must not allow ourselves as a nation to become worse than what people are fleeing. Through our daily work with immigrant families and children, we know that this trauma is lasting, and we call for an immediate and permanent halt to this separation policy.
