On Friday, June 15, sailors from the USS Constitution stopped by Our Daily Bread Employment Center to help prepare and serve breakfast and lunch for guests. The active-duty sailors were in town for the “Star Spangled Sailabration” to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the penning of the national anthem. Six sailors came for breakfast, and another seven served at lunchtime.

After hearing about how many veterans are served at Our Daily Bread Employment Center, the sailors contacted ODBEC Volunteer Manager Doris Franz-Poling to ask about ways in which they could help.

The lunchtime group included Susan Hammond, Senior Mass Communication Specialist in the Navy Office of Community Outreach. Others involved in serving were Savannah Hutchins (E-3 Airman), Sean Kershaw (Fire Controlman 1^st Class), Roxanne Rhoades (Command Master Chief on Board), Candyce Tillman (E-3 Airman), Louie Beasley (E-6 Petty Officer 1^st Class), and Tom Rooney (E-5 Petty Officer 2^nd Class).

The USS Constitution, famously nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” is a United States Navy frigate. The ship was originally launched in 1797, and is the oldest commissioned naval vessel in the world that is still afloat. She is currently in home port at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, MA.  The Constitution has the distinction of having been named by George Washington himself!
