Information About Safe Start Services

The Safe Start Program is an assessment and intervention program for families with children ages two through eleven that provides behavioral management techniques, stress management, problem solving, budgeting, communication and organization skills. The program focuses on preventing child abuse and neglect by providing a continuum of services that support and strengthen families through screenings, referrals, and intervention services either in the family home or in the community.

Benefits

Participants benefit from mentoring, parenting classes, mental health counseling, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (PRP) for children ages five and above, mental health counseling, psychiatric evaluation, support groups, in-home coaching, transportation to needed resources, and financial assistance for basic needs in the home.

The Program

The Program also make referrals to partner agencies for GED preparation, speech and developmental evaluations, job placement, maternal and child health education, psycho- educational groups, respite and substance abuse groups

How long is the Safe Start program?
Safe Start is a 90 to 120 day program with weekly sessions. Prior to discharge, wrap around services can be arranged with various agencies in Harford County depending upon what services are still needed.

Who is this program available for? Who do I request a referral from?
This program is available to residents in Harford County who may self-referral, or request a referral from one of our partner agencies: Early Head Start and Head Start, DSS, Infants and Toddlers, Harford County Health Department, Child Find, Anna’s House, Abilities Network, Harford County Board of Education, Office on Mental Health or Harford Family House.
