This year, Advent begins on, Sunday, Dec. 2. The first two weeks of Advent can be a time for reflection, fasting, and charitable works. But throughout the season, you can embrace the feeling of anticipation, hope, and joy for Christmas.
During this time, the Advent wreath is often displayed with candles that represent the four weeks of the season, as well as “the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus Christ”. One candle is lit each Sunday. Three of the candles are purple, a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes hope. The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. A center white candle is lit on Christmas day.
