When Joyce Swanson began volunteering at Sarah’s House cutting the clients’ hair, she never imagined that 14 years later she would be the Program Director of Client Services. Throughout her years at Sarah’s House, Joyce has held several positions including program assistant, caseworker, volunteer coordinator, and a casework supervisor.
In her latest role, Joyce supervises the caseworkers, interns, the weekend and overnight supervisors and the Project Serve volunteer. She meets with each of the 5 caseworkers every week to discuss the families and any difficulties they may be having. She also works very closely with the Department of Social Services and gives final approval on all referrals.
“It is wonderful to see these families progress through the program and all the pieces begin coming together. When they arrive here, their lives are so fragmented. I have the opportunity to see how every staff member works together to help get them back on track,” Joyce says.
Kathryn Philliben, director of Sarah’s House, says “Joyce is the epitome of an effective leader for client services at Sarah’s House. Her leadership is exemplified by her ability to be compassionate to our guests without being an enabler. She is loyal and dedicated to the mission of Catholic Charities and Sarah’s House. We are very fortunate to have her as part of our staff.”
Joyce is also lucky enough to work with her sister, Angela Murray, who is the Development/Volunteer Associate at Sarah’s House. “We’re all so much of a team here. It’s wonderful that the team includes my own sister!”
Joyce still finds time to cut hair two evenings a week. She also swims every day and does yoga. Of course, nothing is as important as spending time with her 6 grandchildren.
